As a child, Teresa found herself yearning to help others. Seeing others in need filled her with a determination to make a difference.
Later on, she pursued her passion vigorously. In 1985, she began nursing studies while raising her son as a single mother.
She went on to manage a busy schedule as a full-time nurse while raising two more children and coaching their sports teams.
Teresa has channeled much of her energy into playing slo-pitch.
She joined the Oil City Slo-pitch League in 1989, and has run it since 1991. Presently, she sits on the city board as a Diamond Representative.
In 2011 she started the Christmas Campaign. Last Christmas, with the help of her son Logan, 93 families were provided Christmas hampers, and 205 children received pajamas, an outfit, and toys.
Her children's friends call her "Mom"; she is the go-to for life advice.
She is also an adoring grandmother to two grandsons: a four year old and an eleven month old.
Both serve as her inspiration in her charitable endeavors, and as a poignant reminder that no child should go without.
That is where HEARTS (Helping Everyone Access Resources Through Supports) comes in, a non-profit that Teresa built from the ground up, which focuses on providing basic needs to families falling into the low income and working poor demographic.
While initially named 'Powers,' the organization was soon renamed to better represent its goal: to touch lives, and hearts.
Running a non-profit comes with some challenges. While HEARTS received the kind donation of a temporary location, allowing it to serve 11,500 individuals, it is now without a venue.
Teresa, the board, and volunteers continue their efforts through the Campaign to Empower the Community.
That said, Teresa is currently extending a request to secure a permanent, public transit-accessible location so that she can further accomplish her mission: to make a positive difference in the lives of Edmontonians.
