Melody McCray-Miller has served the community in multiple capacities, always leading with her guiding principles embedded in a strong commitment to community service and a belief in people having a voice in their own destiny. 

Melody served as a State Representative for the 89th House District from 2005 to 2013. 

Prior to serving as State Representative, Melody served as the first female African American, to represent the 4th District on the Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners. 

She effectively championed reforms in prevention, early childhood education, and the juvenile justice system in her role as a local public official and state legislator. 

Melody is proud of her rich and diverse background that also includes being the Co-Founder and Owner, Miller's Inc. 

Melody continues to wear multiple hats in the community consulting on issues regarding health disparities, juvenile justice reform as well as business development. 

Melody is a Kansas Health Foundation Fellow and Alumna of the Kansas Leadership Center. 

As a seasoned public policy maker with expertise at both the state and local level, Melody is keenly adept at identifying and understanding the importance of involving the public, in public policy making and is committed to increasing the participating role of "community" in shaping and leading sustainable change at the root level. 

Melody continues her passion for people today, by serving as a catalyst for change in Kansas communities. 

Currently, Melody is helping to lead a project initiative where patients and community are engaged at the grassroot level. 

The initiative is the Women's Initiative Network, a PCORI/ Wichita State grant funded collaborative. 

As one of the co-investigators, Melody works to build trusting partnerships and strengthen community collaborations with a focus on women's health and creating health equity across all populations.

Education: BA Social Work and Administration--Makerere University, Uganda (1975) Master of Community and Regional Planning (1983) and Ph.D. in Sociology (1988) from Iowa State University Masters of Divinity (2005) and Maters of Theological Studies (2007) from Wesley Theological Seminary Professional Experience: Professor, Pastor, Author of 13 books, TV host of Diversity show on KPTS Channel 8, current host of "A Light from the Nile" on KSUN Radio. Awards: Recipient of many Community Service Awards including: Promotion of International Friendship and Understanding Award by Iowa State University, Empowered Women in Wichita and Warrior Women Special Community,Church and School Presentations: Understanding Africa, Obuntu (Human Essence) Approach to making Peace and Curbing Violence, Drumming, Storytelling and Poetry Workshops
