Episode 542 with guest Shanda Golden
#goldentampon was founded in 2017 by Shanda Golden and is now an annual event that distributes tampons and pads for homeless women. Shanda believes that by working together and providing feminine hygiene products for our sisters in transition we can help homeless women restore their dignity.
The number of families in the US needing assistance continues to increase every year. The lack of access to menstrual health products for people who are either homeless or low-income is appalling. SNAP or welfare programs do not cover the cost of these necessary products. Many times a woman must choose between food and her hygiene products. This leaves countless women without the necessary products required not only for their health but also for their dignity.
It is estimated that the lifetime cost of a women’s period will be over $18,000. The fact that menstruation is a taboo topic, to begin with, means that people, who are able to help, often aren’t even aware that such a vast need exists.
For the year 2021, the “Golden Tampon” drive will benefit women receiving services at Safe Embrace.
Safe Embrace provides compassionate and trauma-informed services to individuals suffering from current or past domestic abuse, sexual violence, and/or human trafficking. We also facilitate educational programs and work to increase public awareness about these issues.
